The Generation “A” Strategy

The Generation

In today’s digitally-dominated mediascape, service providers need a powerful new business model that combines paid content creation with lead generation. This approach leverages the authority-building potential of expert premium content to attract high-value clients.

By “premium content,” I’m not talking about books — the traditional paid content route consultants, coaches, and industry experts have relied on to establish credibility and command higher fees. Even in today’s digital world, where publishing on demand is accessible and affordable, you can’t beat the immediacy of an interactive learning environment – especially given that most people don’t read.

The advantages are clear, including:

  • Direct audience engagement: Build relationships with prospects in real-time
  • Full revenue control: Eliminate middlemen like publishers or online retailers
  • Enhanced business development: Create natural opportunities for upselling and cross-promotion

The Generation “A” Strategy (“A” is for “Authority”) leverages your expertise to produce valuable paid content that leads to lucrative consulting and other service work. Your unique experience and point of view fuel the marketing for the training and educational content itself. Plus, you can feature others in your industry in your content (i.e., interviews, podcast guests, etc.) to enhance your site’s value and grow your audience.

While seasoned experts may seem best suited for this model, it’s important to note if you’re new to the game, you can also use the Generation “A” strategy to launch a successful consulting or coaching career.

Maximizing Revenue: A Tiered Approach for Online Ventures

Successful online education businesses utilize a hybrid revenue generation approach. Rather than relying solely on information sales or consulting, they use a tiered system that offers varying levels of access to expertise at different price points.

This strategy not only diversifies income streams but also caters to a wider range of client needs and budgets. Here is an example set of tiers I’ve used over time, and I recommend:

Tier 1: Membership Fees

The foundation of this model is a membership program that provides valuable “how-to” information. While some experts hesitate to share detailed instructions, fearing it might reduce the demand for their services, the opposite is often true. By offering comprehensive guidance, you establish yourself as an authority and increase your value to potential clients.

In our specialized world, even with step-by-step instructions, many people still struggle to apply general advice to their specific situations. Moreover, your experience and talent often make it more appealing for clients to hire you rather than attempt to implement solutions themselves.

Tier 2: Group Coaching

The next level of access involves group coaching programs. These sessions command a higher price, and offer increased individual attention while remaining scalable and less time-intensive than one-on-one consulting.

Tier 3: Workshops and In-Person Events

If you have a local presence or devoted followers and fans willing to travel to work with you in person, workshops and in-person group coaching can form an excellent mid-tier offering. Intensive one to three-day sessions can significantly boost your revenue without overwhelming your client load.

Tier 4: One-on-One Consulting

By offering several tiers of group advice, you can be selective about the individual consulting projects you take on, focusing on the most interesting and lucrative opportunities.

Tier 5: Mentoring Programs

While unsuitable for all business types, mentoring programs can be highly profitable for you and invaluable for your top students seeking guidance in taking their skills to the next level.

Plus, you can also add in these revenue streams:

Product Sales

Operating in a virtual environment allows for easy integration of product sales. This can include software, training materials, and other relevant items offered directly or through affiliate partnerships.

Joint Ventures

Smart collaborations can help offset or eliminate marketing and lead generation costs through positive ROI from membership fees.

Benefits of the Tiered Model

  • Scalability: This approach allows you to build a business that isn’t limited by your personal time constraints.
  • Leverage: Membership revenue can fund hiring people to handle routine tasks, freeing you to focus on high-level strategy and business development.
  • Business Value: By creating systems and diversifying revenue streams, you build a business with independent value that can grow beyond your personal involvement.

While this model requires more effort than simply creating a membership site, it offers a smart, scalable approach to building a consulting business. It allows you to transition from an overworked freelancer to a CEO who can bring in additional business while others handle administrative and profit-producing tasks.

In essence, this tiered revenue model enables you to build a real business that properly rewards your role as the visionary and system creator, escaping the treadmill of self-employment and creating a venture with true growth potential.

Example Use Cases of the Generation “A” Model

The Generation “A” model offers versatile applications across various professions. Let’s explore how different experts can leverage this approach:

Real Estate Agents:

In a market where many believe they can sell their homes independently, realtors face a unique challenge. However, statistics show that 75% of for-sale-by-owner attempts require a realtor’s expertise. A savvy agent could create a “How to Sell Your Own Home in [Local Area]” guide. This resource attracts potential clients and often leads them to recognize the value of professional assistance, ultimately generating business for the realtor.

Marketing Consultants:

A comprehensive small business marketing training program can serve as a valuable standalone product. However, consultants can enhance their offerings with additional tiers or à la carte services, such as specialized advice on market positioning — a critical component of any successful marketing strategy.

Freelance Writers:

Talented writers can diversify their income by creating training programs in various niches, such as “How to Write a Killer Business Plan” or “Smart Thought Leadership Tactics.” ” This approach not only generates passive income but also opens doors for group coaching and workshops, complementing traditional writing projects.

A Different Kind of Content Marketing

The rise of free content as a marketing tool over the last 20 years has blinded people to the fact that for years books were the authority-building “business card” that led to thriving services businesses.

And while that can still be true, the sad fact is most people don’t read, while the rise of online education has made the course format popular with a wide segment of the population.

So, consider an entry-level course instead of a book using the Generation A model. In addition to a thriving services business, you will have also laid the groundwork for a multiple revenue stream business with educational products.
